Great question!
The blending hypothesis supports the phenotype of the offspring to be some kind of mix of the two parents' trait. For example, a 6-foot man and a 4-foot woman would have a child with a height somewhere in between, say around 5 feet. A blend.
Or Red (R) Snapdragon x White (W) Snapdragon = Pink (RW) Snapdragon.
To support Mendel's particulate hypothesis, the offspring would have to look like this:
Red (RR) Snapdragon x White (rr) Snapdragon = Red (RR) Snapdragon 25% + Red (Rr) Snapdragon 50% + White (rr) Snapdragon 25%
Where the dominant allele masks the recessive trait. There is no blending allowed in the particulate hypothesis.
