The building blocks of life are called atoms! Have you ever thought about what all matter is made up of? At the cellular level, where all this matter came from? I like to think of it as Lego's. All the small building blocks come together to form an awesome spaceship or house. Well atoms are similar in the way that they are the building blocks of all matter. Atoms are the smallest unit of life, besides the components the atom is made up of. These components are called subatomic particles. "Sub" meaning beneath, like a submarine! and "atomic" because, atoms!. The subatomic particles are protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, neutrons are neutral and electrons have a negative charge. Now remember, that atoms are the SMALLEST building block of ALL life. Think of it this way, the human body is made up of cells, trillions of cells, and ONE cell is composed of about 100 trillion atoms.
Structure of an atom: You can think of an atom as a big circle. Inside that circle is a smaller circle where they store their protons and neutrons and around that smaller circle is where all the electrons hang out. (I will draw a picture).
