The movement of phloem sap begins with water diffusing into the sieve tubes of the phloem. The carbohydrate or sugar that is produced in the leaves by photosynthesis happens during the day and that glucose sugar is transported into the sieve tubes. This sugar gets transferred to each cell in the leaf and then the sugar moves down to the stem.
