How can an island rule a continent was a truth that permeated the American mind during the runup to revolution. The Seven Years War showed Americans they could stand in the line with British regulars. They could best the French and that they knew a thing or two about combat the Brits had failed to recognize. The capture of Canada added to colonial sense of value and relief form French invasion. While colonists enjoyed a release from terror, the British government sought higher taxes to pay for their wars. A conflict was inevitable.
