The English were looking at the immense amounts of gold that the Spanish had already gotten from their colonization and conquest of Mexico and Peru (silver). They were hoping to find this gold in Virginia, but it wasn't there. Instead, they found good farming and a rich local crop of tobacco - tobacco that eventually made England rich.
