A terminator sequence is a nucleic acid sequence that causes RNA polymerase to stop its activity. It marks the end of a gene or operon, therefore stopping transcription. A stop codon is an mRNA nucleotide triplet that signals the end of the newly formed polypeptide chain during translation. There are three stop codons: UAG, UAA, and UGA. They do not code for an amino acid.
