The function of state legislatures varies from state-to-state. However, a state legislature's job is to usually pass laws, make a budget, and to confirm officials appointed by the governor. Legislatures are usually bicameral, meaning they have two houses: an upper and a lower house. The lower house is usually bigger and is known in my state, Virginia, as the House of Delegates. Budgets start here and is led by the Speaker of the House, the leader of the majority party. The leader of the Senate is the Lieutenant Governor, but day-to-day operations are handled by the majority leader. They also pass laws and appoint officials nominated by the Governor to different positions.
