Let the two number be x and y.

So, x+y=8...(1)

And x-y=1.....(2)

Add the two equations

2x=9, so x=4.5

Y=3.5

Kudos on using decimals or fractions (4 1/2 for X and 3 1/2 for Y). 4 1/2 - 3 1/2 = 1, their difference!
