I just wanted to add on a small comment to the answer provided above.
Since you ended up with
x = x
if you choose an x value, let's say x = 7, then the equation above says that
7 = 7, which is obviously true!
In fact regardless of the value the choice of x, the equation is clearly going to give you a true statement at all times, and thus we say "all real numbers" since any number can go in.
However, let's say you had an equation like this
Example: Solve for x
8x + 7 = 8x - 3
-8x -8x
___________
7 = -3
Clearly, 7 ≠ -3 , so unlike the other equation, where every number worked all the time, here there is no number that we can choose for x that will make the equation true. Thus, we would say that we have, "no solution".
