Homophones are two or more words that are pronounced the same but have dlifferent meanings. They may be spelled exactly the same, or may have different spellings. Several examples come to mind:
- reed (a hollow swamp grass) and read (pronounced {rede},as in the verb to read a book) but NOT read (pronounced {red}, the past tense of the same verb)
- lead (pronounced {led}, as in the metal used in plumbing and soldering) and led (past tense of the verb to lead)
- (Just for fun) lead (pronounced {lede}, another name for a dog's leash) or lead (pronounced {lede}, a promising piece of information that might make a great news story)
