It is IMPORTANT to use the proper units to solve this:
Let x =cm/bow
Total length of ribbon
Dawn Emily
12x + 128 cm = 9x + 176 cm
12x - 9x = 176 - 128
3x = 48
x = 16
The length of each bow is 16 cm. NOTE that (cm/bow)*(bow) gives you length in cm.
There is a total of (128+126) cm left over. That can make 15 bows and have 14 cm left over
[That is, 15*16 + 14]

The question asked how much ribbon did Evan have left in the actual question from the Math in Focus Grade 5A Extra Practice and Homework workbook(not of both he and Julie in your version of the question-maybe we have different versions of the question). So the answer is 11, because he had 176 cm of ribbon left. 176 divided by 16 cm =11 bows he could make from his left over ribbon. With bar models, you figure out that 3 extra bows Julia made=48 cm (176-128), so each bow is 16 cm. The above calculation to figure out the cm in each bow using algebra though is correct.12/27/20
