How do you draw and paint with a reference without directly copying it? I want to create movie posters and artwork using reference from movies, but not just directly copy from stills.

so... I'm in advertising during school this was one of the hardest things for students to learn... if you didn't take the photo paint the painting or any other piece of visual communication you can think of - it isn't yours.

That said;

1. take your drawing and painting skills to a new level with lessons
2. start studying 'layout and design' so you can better understand how to combine visuals and typography by utilizing royalty free images graphics and fonts
3. start taking photos of everything and anything - it's how you build your own library and style.

There isn't a quick easy solution - but the good thing is - so long as you're doing it for school or fun - it's ok to go get a John Travolta Vinny Vega image and use it in your compositions for now.
