What are the types of white blood cells found in the blood?

There are 5 types of white blood cells (abbreviated as WBC) also known as leukocytes. They are: Neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils & basophils. They are classified or grouped into 2 types, or the mechanism that they function- granulocytic and non-granulocytic.

A granulocyte is a WBC that contains granules, or chemicals, that aid in immunity by attacking the foreign substance by using the chemicals inside the granules. A non-granulocyte is a WBC that uses antibodies (proteins) to aid in the immune process. Those cells that end in “-phil” are the granulocytes. They are: neutrophils, eosinophils & basophils.

Non-granulocytes include the lymphocytes & monocytes.
