Hey there!
The mitochondria is responsible for producing energy that the cell needs in order to do work and carry out its various functions. The cell brings in glucose as food and begins to break it down. The mitochondria then gets some of these breakdown products and uses them to produce ATP. The cell then uses the ATP as an energy source.
