asked 01/14/15how much flour is left in the bag?
Kamala had 5,026 grams of flour in a canister. She bought a 4,157 gram bag of flour. She poured some flour from the bag to the canister. As a result, the mass of the flour in the canister is now twice the mass of the flour left in the bag. How much flour is left in the bag?

x=# of grams poured in (out)
5026+x=2(4157-x)
5026+x=8314-2x
x+2x=8314-5026
3x=3288
x=3288/3
x=1096 grams poured in (out)
4157-1096=3061 grams left in the bag
Hi Tanya,
Let x = number of grams of flour poured from the bag into the canister
5026 + x = 2(4157 - x) (canister is twice the mass of the flour left in the bag
5026 + x = 8314 - 2x
3x = 8314 - 5026
3x = 3288
x = 1096 (this tells us how much was poured from the bag
the amount left equals the original amount 4157 -x
You can figure that out
Hope this helps
