Assume that the number is 'N'
Then the sum of the number and -7 = N + (-7)
3 times the sum of the number and -7 IS 12
3*(N-7) = 12
3N- 21 = 12
+21 =+21
--------------------------
3N =33
divide by 3 both sides
N = 11

Note that this solves: "Three times (the number and -7) is 12. English is ambiguous, this could have been "(Three times the number) and -7 is 12."07/28/19
