I'm not sure if this is a riddle or a simple math question, can you please help?

If it is a riddle, you have two pieces, since you only took the two to Joe. Nothing says you gave them to him.
If it is a word problem, it is poorly written. What if someone took the three pieces out of the box as you were going over to Joe?
