So, on a 2D object, you can fit so many 1-cm squares across and so many up and down. We can count them individually and get 50 in your case, or count how many are in one row and multiply that by the number of columns, or vice versa, and get the area.
If you peel the piece of paper, you now have two 2D surfaces with the same area, therefore doubling your area. I can fit 50 squares on one and 50 squares on the other.
