The research community has confidently established retroviruses leave the cell by budding. This suggestion was first done in 1991 when researchers introduced mutations into the protein complex known as Gag which caused viral particles to accumulate on the inside of cells. Recently, studies have concluded the virus interacts with endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESRTs). The exact timing, and specific mechanism, remains unknown.
