One answer that comes to mind is the switch from simple past tense used for more distant events or the passage of time through more distance, and then a move into the “narrative present” when following minute-to-minute action. For example:
“The small goats walked peacefully over the mountains and along the rocky paths for hours. Then suddenly she is there above them. The mother eagle circles slowly, assessing the vulnerabilities of the young ones. The adult goats turn their heads to keep tabs on her soaring presence. The tiny ones scamper along, oblivious.”
