Proofreading is defined by Merriam-Webster as the action of “read[ing] and mark[ing] corrections in (something, such as a proof)”

Three Simple Steps for a Successful Proofread:

1. Read the essay out loud 
2. This will help you catch typos, comma splices, and any phrase or sentence that can be shortened or re-worded for clarity. 
3. Look for citations 
4. If this is a research based paper, take a moment to scan for only citations. 
5. Did you miss one?
6. Did you forget the page number? 
7. Look for repetition. 
8. Are you using the same transitional phrase or adjective over and over again? 
9. Do you find yourself stuck with the same verb or noun? Is there a lack of pronouns being used? 

Once you have completed these steps, give it a final read. If you feel confident, turn it in!

Read out loud and then read it backwards (from the end to the beginning). this will help you see small grammatical errors and sentence structure. break them down into paragraphs as well. print out the paper as well. its easy to miss mistakes when reading on a laptop. print it out and you will be able to recognize more mistakes that wouldn't have been obvious otherwise.
