Proofreading is defined by Merriam-Webster as the action of “read[ing] and mark[ing] corrections in (something, such as a proof)”
Three Simple Steps for a Successful Proofread:
- Read the essay out loud
- This will help you catch typos, comma splices, and any phrase or sentence that can be shortened or re-worded for clarity.
- Look for citations
- If this is a research based paper, take a moment to scan for only citations.
- Did you miss one?
- Did you forget the page number?
- Look for repetition.
- Are you using the same transitional phrase or adjective over and over again?
- Do you find yourself stuck with the same verb or noun? Is there a lack of pronouns being used?
Once you have completed these steps, give it a final read. If you feel confident, turn it in!
