How to write two seemingly different characters that are actually the same person?

I'm currently working on a book with two protagonists and switching the perspective between them. They have quite different plotlines, but actually they're the same person. English is not my first language, and in my language a subject always has a gender-neutral word. But I'm afraid my readers will feel cheated by the revelation/twist. How to avoid this and make it believable?

You need to join a creative writing class and take your chapters for the teacher and students to read and critique. That is called a writing workshop. If your characters are not believable, they'll say so and give you ideas on how to fix them. If you can't join a class, look for writing workshops in your area. There are writers who meet in coffee shops to discuss each other's works.
