While centromeres are typically located in the central area of a chromosome, they can also be located near the mid-region or at a number of different positions on thechromosome. Specialized zones on centromeres called kinetochores attach thechromosomes to spindle fibers in prophase in mitosis.Centromere is the position in the chromosome where sister chromatids are separated into two daughter cells which is obtained during mitosis. According to thelocation of centromere, the chromosomes are classified into groups [4] namely metacentric, submetacentric, acrocentric and telocentric.
