Math masters around the world!
10 + 26 = 36.
36 ÷ 6 = 6
Our number(x) is 6.
6 times a number is 6x. 26 less than that is 6x - 26. "Is" is =.
6x - 26 = 10
We need x all by itself. First, we add 26, the opposite of subtracting it, because subtracting 26 and adding it just leaves 0. We do it to both sides.
6x - 26 + 26 = 10 + 26
6x = 36
Now, we divide by the coefficient, the opposite of multiplying 6 by x, because 6/6 = 1, but we don't write 1x.
6x/6 = 36/6
x = 6
Let's check.
6(6) - 26 = 10
36 - 26 = 10
10 = 10
0 = 0
Boom.
