The easiest way of turning decimals into fractions are by taking the decimal and placing it over a multiple of 10. In this case Jane drank 1.75 quarts of water, so she drank 1 and 75/100 quarts of water. Now we will want to simplify the fraction so we can compare Jane with Tom.
Knowing 100 is divisible by 4, the denominator in Tom's fraction, let's try to make Jane's fraction into 4ths.
To turn 100 into 4, we need to divide by 25, so we will divide both the 75 and 100 in Jane's fraction to simplify this.
75 / 25 = 3
100 / 25 = 4
So Jane drank 1 3/4 quarts of water.
Now you need to decide if 1 3/4 is larger or smaller than 1 1/4 to decide who drank more water.
