I would say keep writing and don't worry about how much it may overlap with what is going on in the world right now. Currently there is so much that people do realize and much more we don't, so it would be astonishing if you were able to know everything in the world and predict the outcomes.
An example of fictional forecasting would be any number of Simpsons episodes people often cite as "causing" something based on a conspiracy theory when it is more likely the authors thought it would be funny or interesting to have X event happen. Sure enough, X event did wind up happening so many years down the road, but the end results were not the exact same and there was no causation and arguably no correlation between the two either.
