auxin which is synthesized in the apex of the shoot will move down towards the plant and inhibit the formation of later stages of lateral buds thus auxin inhibits laterl bud formation this way lateral buds can be made to grow by decapacitation of auxiliary buds
I would not generally say auxin is superior to other hormones with its IAA or IBA because apical dominance can also be overcome by other hormones like cytokinin's which has a antagonistic effect to auxiliary bud growth
