What evidence is there, if any, that economic inequality leads to less trust in society?

[This map](https://jodi.graphics/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Generally-speaking-most-people-in-your-country-can-be-trusted-of-_Agree_-answers-Eurobarometer-471-April-2018.png) was posted in /r/europe recently, it got me thinking about the causes of this. Does anyone know of any evidence that income or economic inequality leads to this? If anyone can suggest any other reasons, I'm all ears.

We may be able to track trust as it relates to income inequality by tracking the Happiness Index of a country. When people are happy in their lives, with the government, with economic status and sustainability, they are generally have a positive and trustworthy attitude. However, note that the Happiness Index includes many more variables than just trust.
