More specifically: Two of my book series' main characters are (temporarily) diplomats. It's unavoidable to the progress of the plot. But diplomacy is inherently slow and boring. So, the general question is: How does one handle boring but necessary scenes? Both general and specific answers welcome. Examples from successful books also welcome.
Why choose to see diplomacy as boring? You have a chance to make that general feeling null and void. You could create zany diplomat characters that adhere to the norm. Don't think as these characters diluting your vision but as a great break to show something new that negates general opinion. If they are also only temp diplomats? Then more reason to let yourself run free and break the norm! Diplomats are not all boring. I grew up overseas and knew very colorful characters. No one is boring if you add the spice!
