Solve this problem with repeated addition or multiplication (I'll do both):
3/4 + 3/4 + 3/4 + 3/4 + 3/4 + 3/4 =
Adding fractions with a common denominator is "easy"---just add the numerators and keep the same denominator
So here we have 3+3+3+3+3+3 = 18/4
18/4 is an improper fraction. It's also a division problem (18 divided by 4). Most kids ask: "How many 4s in 18?" The answer (4) is your whole # in a mixed number. Then kids ask: "What's left?" The answer (2) is your remainder which stands for 2/4 or 1/2. Therefore, 18/4 = 4 and 1/2 cups
Now let's multiply . . .
6 x 3/4 can be written 6/1 x 3/4 (this form can help to remind you that when multiplying fractions you multiply the numerators and denominators)
6 x 3 is your numerator (18)
1 x 4 is your denominator (4)
Same answer as above: 18/4 cups
