こと - to substitute abstract nouns
悲(かな)しいことがあった。A sad thing (event, etc.) happened.
いいことを教えてあげる。I'll teach you a good thing - (advice, trick to doing something, secret)
面白いことを聞いた。 I heard an interesting thing (news, story, rumor)
大切なことを言いたい。I want to say something important (News, etc.).
Nのこと: emphasize a noun
彼のことが好きです。I love him.
明日のことを忘れよう。Let’s forget about tomorrow.
彼女のことを聞いた。 I've heard about her.
たけしさんのことなんて変だったね。Something's off about Takeshi.
Certain idiomatic phrases:
(ADJ too) したことがある: To have the experience doing
(ADJ too) することがある: There are times when (s/o) does
書くことができる: To be able to write
〜ことにする: To decide to...
理想的(りそうてき)な意志(いし)について書くことにした。
〜ことになる: Something was arranged so that…
来月から日本の支社(ししゃ)に転勤(てんきん)することになった。
〜ことになっている: It’s a rule/custom that
日本では、あいさつする時に、お礼することになっている。
In Japan, it is customary to bow when you’re greeting someone.
アメリカでは、あいさつする時に握手(あくしゅ)することになっている。In America, you shake hands when greeting someone.
の: For sensory verbs (to see, to hear, to feel, etc..) or with 待つ, 手伝う, じゃまする, やめる or 止める
趣味はテイクンドウをすることだと言った。I said my hobby is doing TKD.
テイクンドウをするのは趣味だ。My hobby is doing TKD.

こと: With verbs which indicate verbal communication (to speak, 命令(めいれい) to command, to report, to ask, to promise) 報連相: 報告、連絡、相談 - inform, contact and consult
Nominalization:
の: generally used for SUBJECTIVE matters
映画を見るのが好きです。
I like to watch movies
Use だったの for な-adjectives
便利なのが好きです。安いのが好きです。
立派だったのが好きでした。新しかったのが好きでした。
こと: generally used for OBJECTIVE matters
毎日、野菜を食べることは健康(けんこう)にいいですよ。
Eating vegetables every day is good for your health.
Use であること for な-adjectives
彼の性格は乱暴であることもう知っていた。
Caution: If you are nominalizing something before です (or related words), you MUST use こと.
