I am a newly licensed Japanese teacher in the state of Massachusetts. I have spent 14 years tutoring Japanese both privately and in a university tutoring center. I also co-taught a university level Japanese class as part of my duties as a teaching assistant and I’ve TA'd for classes in Japanese literature and writing intensive courses as well.

I first became interested in Japanese through manga and anime although I didn't start studying the language in earnest until I was 21 or 22. I started off with a year of self-study before enrolling in classes.

Since then, I have studied abroad in Japan for a year, passed the JLPT N2, earned a Master's Degree in the language and worked in Miyazaki Prefecture, teaching English for three years.

I am currently working toward passing the JLPT N1 and ACTFL's OPI at the advanced level.

I tutor Study Skills, ESL and Writing as well.

Schedule effective as of April 4, 2022
For in-person meetings, I will be enforcing a mask policy due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

I am a native speaker of the English language, and I have studied a wide array of foreign languages myself (Japanese, French), which helps me understand where their frustrations may lie. I have helped Chinese speaking students of English in the past; one student for 3 years.

Japanese

I began my studies in Japanese independently in 2006. Starting in 2008 I began taking Japanese courses at SUNY New Paltz followed by 10 months studying in Kanazawa, Japan. After graduating, I have continued my studies independently; I have passed the JLPT N2 and I have my sights on the N1. I have recently graduated with my Master's Degree in Japanese from UMass Amherst, where I also TA’ed for the elementary Japanese course. I have a teaching license through Massachusetts state.

As the former Assistant to the Tutoring Center Coordinator of SUNY New Paltz, one of my duties was to create training modules which include strategies for study, organization and scheduling which can be used across a wide range of disciplines. These are meant to help students discover their strengths and bolster their weaknesses in order to achieve academic success.

As part of my duties as a graduate assistant, I would often meet with students to help them improve their writing. Many of the students I have helped are freshmen or sophomores who are new to writing papers at the college level. I have also worked with students who need remedial help because of learning disabilities. I have a background as an ESL tutor which allows me to help students whose first language is not English as well.

Very helpful and patient tutor with great explanations and study resources

David was very helpful in helping me review for my JLPT N3 exam. I wanted a tutor that could provide me with specific tips for preparing for the test and with study resources that I could use to my advantage, and David provided precisely that. I was able to review a lot, and he helped me gain confidence in my Japanese knowledge in order to pass the test. I would highly recommend David as a tutor for anyone who wishes to practice and improve their Japanese skills with a patient and knowledgable tutor

Reliable, adaptable, and kind.

I'm a high school student leaving for international exchange in Japan in a few days. As preparation for the trip and to sharpen my Japanese skills before I left, I took tutoring under Rubino-sensei. He was reliable, adaptable (especially with my rapidly shifting schedule), and kind. I'm far more confident with my Japanese skills now than I was when I started studying under his wing, and I would personally recommend his tutoring services to anyone looking to improve their Japanese skills. He's also got lots of advice surrounding Japanese culture beyond the language itself.

Highly knowledgeable and supportive tutor

David was very patient with my son, and helped him to develop his Japanese language skills. He was very thorough and worked hard to ensure that he had a solid understanding of Hiragana, and Kanji writing and speaking pronunciation skills. Excellent tutor, we’ll definitely be back.

Sensei David is a great tutor

He's such a friendly guy. This was only our second lesson but he makes it feel like we've been friends for years. Yet at the same time we learn and he teaches in a way that matches my pace.

Great tutor, very patient and understanding

All of my sessions with David have been fantastic, without a doubt one of the best tutors I've ever worked with. One of the things that I really like about David is that he is understanding of the pace I need to move at given my busy schedule. Looking forward to our next session.
