The Hundred Years War causes the Great Schism, which was a period of political insecurity for the Papacy. During the war, various Popes were in Avignon, France. For additional stability, political reasons, and return to a simpler way of life that many Catholics sought, the Papacy returned to Rome. During the Great Schism, many felt France was a more secure and suitable place for the Papacy.
