What are pit fields?

I found this statement from my biology text book, "The sieve tube elements and the companion cells are connected by pit fields present between the common longitudinal walls". Is the pit field same as Plasmodesmata ?

Pit fields are small sections where pits a formed within cell walls in plants. No, pit fields are not the same as plasmodesmata. Pit fields are a small layer of cell walls. Whereas, plasmodesmata are cytoplasmic bridges that extend across the cell walls.
