Hu goes out for lunch, and the price of the meal is $45. The sales tax on the meal is 6%, and the family leaves a 20% tip. What is the total cost of the meal?

Please answer with whole number or decimal. Evolves prevents, I need the answer soon!

Did you ever find the answer, if so what was it because I have a similar question on my homework? And I need the answer very soon.

Rachel, see my explanation for the problem, it has more details about where the numbers come from.

Rachel,
When eating out, you usually leave a tip on the price of the meal, $45.00, not on the tax ! Why would you tip the tax ? That's just my opinion. I don't know what your teacher expects, though !!

If Arthur is correct about NOT tipping on the tax, you would pay 1.2*$45 + .06(45), or $56.70

Most people when tipping round a good deal in their calculations, so the question of tipping tax or not is often a moot point.  For example, if this was my bill, I'd probably get the check for $47.70 (tax+meal) and round up to $50, and then very quickly say that 20% is $10, and leave $60.00 for the meal.  (If the service was bad, I might round down.)

Note also in this case, even with a decent dinner bill, the difference is only 54 cents.
