Unfortunately, race has always been used as a social construct in history with no basis in biology. An individual's DNA determines their skin color by determining how many pigments the skin contains and determines the structure of their skeleton which determines how they appear. Geographically, different human populations will take on different characteristics that enable them to adapt. For example, the peoples of Africa have heavily pigmented to protect from the sun. Vice versa, northern peoples were not in the sun compared to the African people. Therefore, overtime, their pigments decreases, giving rise to lighter complexion. For a non-race example, consider the teeth of different tribes. Due to their diets, a population's dental characteristics will vary based on their location.
