Once nutrients are absorbed from the intestines into the bloodstream they are transported to the liver so that the liver may selectively filter the blood so that the appropriate nutrient levels are present. The vessels that return the blood to systemic circulation is the hepatic (liver) portal system (veins). Metabolic wastes are carried through systemic circulation to the liver and kidneys via the hepatic artery and renal arteries, respectively.
