Hi Ryan,
Since Isha ran longer than Logan, we will subtract those two from each other to get the difference which we’ll call x:
5/6 - 3/4 = x
To subtract fractions we need the denominators to be the same. For example, if we multiply the first denominator by 2 and the second one by 3, then both denominators will be 12:
5/12 - 3/12 = x
But this is not good enough, because when we multiply the denominator by any number we must do the same to the numerator in each fraction, so that the fraction stays in balance:
10/12 - 9/12 = x
When we have two fractions with matching denominators, we can just subtract the numerators and leave the denominator alone:
1/12 hour = x
Please let me know if I can be more helpful, thanks!
Joe
