If you break apart the word: cyto means cell(s), and skeleton means framework. The cytoskeleton is a network of proteins that is found in all types of life. 

 

It has a lot of important functions. One is that it helps give shape and support to the structure of cells. Another is that in humans in particular, parts of the cytoskeleton aid in muscle contraction.
