How to find the equation of the line through the point (1,5) that is parellel to the line that passes through (2,1) and (0,-5)

Is there more then one way to solve this equation?

Hi Youssef,

 

First thing that should come to mind when answering such questions is slop. Slops of parallel lines are equal.

 

slop of the line passing through (2,1) and (0,-5) is

 

[1- (-5)]/2-0 = 3   // now you have the slop of your line and you write it in y=mx+b form.

 

y = 3x + b when x=1, y=5  substitute this in the equation

 

5 = 3*1 + b  => the y-intercept, b=2  and your equation is

 

y = 3x + 2
