After World War II, the United States of America and the Soviet Union were left as the greatest international superpowers while many of the other countries were struggling economically.
The leader of the Soviet Union during this time was Joseph Stalin (after he took over when Lenin died) and he was extremely paranoid of another invasion into his country (that occurred when Hitler invaded during WWII). As a result, he planned on expanding to create satellite states. The United States became aware of this and became fearful of the spread of communism-which was the ideology of the Soviet Union during that time.
As a result, there became an ideological power struggle between mainly the United States and the Soviet Union that became known as the Cold War.
Hope this helped! :)
