There is also the more extreme version of Chiaroscuro called Tenebrism that uses extreme contrasts of light of dark to create contrast and drama, as opposed to the gentle shading of chiaroscuro that is used more to show depth. The Baroque painter Caravaggio is an excellent example of Tenebrism in art. Judith Beheading Holofernes and The Calling of St Matthew use extreme light and shadow to show drama and create more interest.
