Stability. Ecosystems do not last forever but while they are responding to changing biotic and abiotic factors, they need to maintain stability.

The question actually was, what do ecosystems want to be?05/23/19

Difficult to summarize the “wants” of an ecosystem in a 9 letter word. They want to be stable so I chose “stability” because it’s 9 letters. Are you looking for a different type of description?05/23/19

Using "want" suggests that an ecosystem has feelings and the ability to act on those feelings. This is a way a teacher can get a student to relate to a concept. Ecosystems "want" to be stable. Ecosystems want to go through stages of "succession" where the final result is a mature community of plants and animals that are dependent on one another. As Louis stated ecosystems do not last forever. Things like floods, windstorms and fire disrupt an ecosystem. The things humans do to make farmland and build things we find useful also tend to "disrupt" and ecosystem. Fun fact, a "weed" is a plant that is very good at growing in newly disrupted habitat. When that habitat is our garden we don't appreciate it completing with our flowers and vegetables.10/05/19
