Just like many leaders; for example Hitler and Napoleon, POWER. The more land and people they controlled the more power they had. Psychologically, it was to achieve some inner need for control or for greatness. From an Evolutionary point of view, it perhaps is part of human nature. But whatever the reason, it is about power.
