It is contradictory only if you think in terms of a rational choice aware of general economic conditions and perspectives. In sociology we should cross this phenomenon with other contributing factors, starting from mortality rate (specifically infant mortality rate, very high in poor countries), education (including sexual education and access to contraceptives), and urbanization. Cultural and religious factors can be also be considered, as well as traditional lifestyles - versus the extents of industrialization and modernization.
Why do people in poor countries tend to prefer having more kids? isn't that contradictory to commonsense?
