Hello Katelyn! I can answer this question briefly. An oak tree in NY in the fall has leaves of a variety of colors because the tree lost all the chlorophyll in the leaves changing them from green to yellows, oranges, and reds. After the leaves fall, and it gets closer to winter, the tree moves all of its essential nutrients towards the trunk and into the roots. It will stay in this dormant state through the winter months while not moving very many nutrients inside.
I'd be happy to discuss this further if you like!
