You plan to paint the walls and carpet the floor of a rectangular room . The floor of the rectangular room measures 18ft by 24ft. The ceiling is 12ft high .there is an 8ft by 3ft door on one of the smaller walls of the room.

So for the carpeting, you will need to calculate the area of the floor, by finding the area, which is A = l x w for that area. Doing 18 x 24 gives us 432 square feet of carpet needed. For the walls, we calculate these areas as well, minus the area of the door which is 8 x 3 = 24 sq. feet. For the walls we calculate 12' x 24' = 288 ft squared. We then multiply that by two, as there are two walls of that dimension = 576 sq. feet. Then for the other walls we calculate 12' x 18' = 216 sq. feet, then times that by two = 432 sq. feet. We add up the 576 + 432 = 1008 then subtract the area of the door (24 sq. feet) and we get 984 sq. feet. So we will need 432 sq. feet of carpeting, and 984 sq. feet of paint to complete the project.
