There are a number a ways to encourage English learners to write more. Here are three.
1) Give visual instructions. ELL students often have a harder time processing spoken language. It is therefore beneficial to write on the board whenever possible. Writing out the prompts, instructions, and background information would help your students better grasp the concepts.
2) Use Group Work. If you want your students to learn, they have to be engaged in the activity. Writing with others or sharing work in a group setting will facilitate their creativity and allow them to express themselves through meaningful interactions and writing.
3) Encourage Self Expression. Create a space in which your students feel comfortable sharing their personal experiences. Assign a journal to each student. During the school day or in the evenings as homework, have them write about their experiences. As they practice mindfulness, they will also get use to writing more.
