1. Actually, for a large portion of the population, the Great Depression was a time of financial growth. There were more millionaires created during the Great Depression than at any other time in history (except maybe for today - you should check into this before believing me).
2, 3. People used to immigrate to America in large part because of the possibility of achieving the American dream. I do not believe this is so much the case today. Probably in large part today they immigrate to escape poor economic conditions or violence in other parts of the world. U.S. born citizens are having more difficulty achieving the American dream today due to the deep entrenchment of the rich and their manipulation of the economic systems, the high levels of corporate intrusion and corruption in the government and the illegal and immoral escapades of our bankers and CEO's. Essentially, the economy has been tuned to yield profits for those who are already in possession of astounding amounts of money and resources, regardless of the effect on or even the detriment to the population at large.
The American Dream for myself would be to see the dismantling of large portions of the federal government and a diminishing role of money over votes.
