"Binary" refers to the assumption that gender occurs in only two forms; male and female. Someone who identifies as "binary" considers themself either male or female.
"Non-binary" refutes the standard binary assumption, suggesting that there exist other genders besides male and female. Thus, someone who identifies as "non-binary" considers themself neither strictly male nor strictly female and possibly a different gender entirely.
